Slugs through choke
WebbShotgun season for deer in my area opens this Monday and I was debating on what shells to use. I know that shooting slugs through a rifled choke is better than just shooting rifled slugs, but my question was, is it better or worse to shoot buckshot from a rifled choke and how do you guys load your guns? i.e. Buckshot, Buckshot, Slug Webb14 jan. 2007 · Joined Feb 7, 2005. 1,719 Posts. #3 · Jan 6, 2007. Sure you can. They swage down to the muzzle just fine. Most all 410 barrels are full choke. Only a few that I have seen are not. The Rossi ss is Mod. choke and the Mossberg 410 Slugster is cyl. bore. I think Browning sells one with choke tubes and one model of the 9410 Win. has choke tubes.

Webb16 sep. 2024 · Rifled slugs are designed to pass through chokes, but turkey chokes are an exception. Do not shoot any other kind of slug besides a rifled slug through a tight choke. My recommendation is to change the choke tubes. A Full choke, .030" constriction is safe with rifled slugs and steel shot, yet will throw a plenty tight pattern for turkey. Webb8 sep. 2024 · A modified choke is best for most types of slugs. Regular slugs can be shot through the full choke, but that can damage the barrel threads. You can also use rifled slugs if you have an upgraded cylinder choke. The modified choke is slightly more constricting than the improved cylinder choke.

The standard bore diameter of a 410 is as expected 0.410 inches in diameter with constriction down to ~0.375 inch if your gun is choked about full choke . Webb3 aug. 2009 · The second choice would be an Improved Cylinder or Modified choke Tube. My Ithaca Deerslayer barrels are choked IC and shoot shot very well and slugs to 100 yards. I use those on deer and after I tag out on controlled deer or elk. My 870 with a 28 in barrel , modified choke and turkey sights also shoots slugs very well.
Webb28 sep. 2024 · You should not shoot slugs —or any other shot—through your barrel without a choke in place, since there is a very real possibility that you will damage the threading. If your accuracy with this choke is acceptable, stick with it. If it doesn’t, experiment with other chokes until you find the one that performs best.
